Draft Joomla-based version of Buninyong's community website
The currently active version of this website is at: www.buninyong.vic.au
Surrounded by wooded hills and ridges, the pretty township of Buninyong lies at the
foot of landmark Mt Buninyong, 120km west of Melbourne. Buninyong lives happily in today's world but treasures its rural beauty and the picturesque gold-era buildings which give it its old-world tranquility and charm. Historic buildings now house contemporary cafes and shops, whilst markets, festivals and a wide range of amenities all contribute to a vigorous community life.
Founded in 1839, the little town was the earliest inland settlement in what later became the
State of Victoria. Then, in August 1851, everything changed when Buninyong's blacksmith discovered gold, starting a rush that gave birth to Ballarat and the enormous riches of the Victorian goldfields.
Today, the "first-settlement" benefits from its proximity to the
prosperous regional city of Ballarat, but Buninyong still proudly protects its
independent identity. This is preserved by a strong sense of local
community, our distinctive town centre and the encircling green belt of
bushlands and farms, all presided over by by our beloved Mount.
